Assignment #1

Mexico

I traveled to Mexico nine years ago where my family and I spent one week near Playa Del Carmen. My most vivid memories from our vacation come from two particular adventures we went on.

First, was a tour we took of various cenotes (sinkholes) that have emerged all over the Yucatàn Peninsula. Their beauty was mesmerizing as we got to snorkel and discovery the various life-forms and geological features.

The second adventure was a visit to ancient Mayan ruins. Particularly, the monumental ruin named the Chichen Itza, which stands out in my mind for its unique characteristic of casting the shadow of a serpent that is only visible during the spring equinox.

Finally, when I think of Mexico, I picture the various vendors and artists on the street that are constantly in attempt to force their product on you and always willing to bargain.

  1. Hi Jordan,
I like your comment, it's interesting to learn what all the different student think about Mexico. There is so much history, wildlife, and partying, that it makes for a great place with plenty of things to do. And it's so close to, I definitely need to make another trip down there. This time I would actually like to check out some of the interesting things there.

  2. I like your comment about street vendors, I got to experience that first hand when I was doing community service in Tecate and was coming back to the USA via the Tijuana border crossing. There were so many beautiful things to buy, art like you would never see in the US. Although I didn't buy anything, I still remember them trying to get me to buy their products.

  3. Jordan,
When you went snorkeling in the cenotes, what did you see? I would be very interested in seeing the geographical formations. I read once that there were some centoes designated for human sacrifices and others where jade and other religious jewels were found. Was there a ceiba tree above the ones that you swam in?

  4. Did you snorkle in only one cenote or more? And where were they located? How deep was it? Did you only see geographical features or were there fish or artifacts or other things also? It must have been fascinating! I envy you.

  5. I remember when I was younger driving into Tijuana and the venders just coming up to your car and trying to sell stuff like gum and jewelry. Their are some pushy vendors that are trying to make a sell but I visited Jamiaca as well I feel their vendors are alot worse.
